The Burnet and Georgetown Gateway baseball teams split games two and three of their series April 9 and 12. The Bulldogs’ 9-1 win in game one March 14 means Burnet won the series.

The Bulldogs (22-3, 10-1) beat the Gators (12-9-1, 7-4) 10-7 April 9 and lost 5-0 April 12.

That loss ended an 11-game winning streak that dates back to a 6-3 loss to Glen Rose March 7.

“We made mistakes we hadn’t made,” Burnet head coach Russell Houston said. “It’s baseball. It’s hard to win them all. They pitched well, and he didn’t walk anybody. We didn’t get timely hits, and we didn’t get runners on without two outs.”

Gateway used two pitchers – Justus Franke and Caleb Small.

“I think their pitchers did a great job of keeping us off balance,” Houston said. “I didn’t think we played our best baseball.”

Gateway’s Austin Pestow had an RBI in the first inning and Paul Samaripa hit a three-run homer in the fifth.

The Bulldogs won the shootout April 9 with senior pitcher Kade Shaw on the mound.

Burnet, which was ranked No. 9 in Class 4A, still remains atop of the district standings with Gateway and Lago Vista tied for second and Lampasas and Jarrell tied for fourth at 4-7 each.

Burnet welcomes Marble Falls Tuesday, April 16. The junior varsity plays at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity follows.

“We have a three-game lead with four to play,” Houston said. “As long as you can learn from your mistakes, you can stomach it better. We’re excited to keep going. It’s been a long year. We’re excited to keep it rolling.”
